Top Logistics Stocks To Buy Right Now

As of October 13, the small-cap Russell 2000 Index was down 12.9% from its 2014 high on July 3—a double-digit correction not seen in more than three years. With the U.S. economy slowly improving and Fed tapering winding down as scheduled, what is driving this pullback? Co-Chief Investment Officer Francis Gannon talks about economic growth beyond our borders and how it has been playing a role in shifting investor sentiment.

Investors can be forgiven if they felt like Halloween arrived a little early this year.

Volatility has returned to the equity markets with a vengeance of late. Investors fear that the pronounced economic malaise that currently holds Europe and Asia in its grasp may spread to the U.S. As of October 13, the small-cap Russell 2000 Index was down 12.9% from its 2014 high on July 3.

While there have been a number of mild pullbacks in recent years, the small-cap market had not seen a double-digit correction for more than three years prior to this most recent decline. Interestingly, the third quarter of 2014 also saw the first negative quarter for the small-cap index in the last nine.

A closer look at the correction-to-date and the just-completed third quarter reveals some compelling developments that began with a down month in July in which the Russell 2000 lost 6.1%. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's comments about "stretched" valuations within small-cap, specifically biotech and the social media end of technology, made an already anxious small-cap market even more uneasy.

Most of our Featured Funds were also down during the month, though most outperformed their respective benchmarks. In August, the Russell 2000 rebounded with a 5.0% gain, and in this strong positive month most of these same portfolios trailed their benchmarks—again, as we would typically expect.

September, however, was an unusual month that dispensed with history's more familiar script. The pace of global economic growth was questioned while here in the U.S. Fed tapering continued to wind down.

What, then, made September, and ultimately the third quarter, so unusual and far more of a trick than a treat for most equity investors?

It was not the 6.1% decline for the Russell 2000 in September. September was unusual because it did not matter where you were on the quality spectrum, which often provides down market protection. What mattered in this unpredictable period was one's sector exposure.

Our sector exposure varies, but for the most part our Featured Fund portfolios have been overweight most recently in economically sensitive sectors, including Consumer Discretionary, Energy, Industrials, Information Technology, and Materials, and underweight in more defensive areas such as Health Care and Utilities.

During September, mounting concerns about the slowing pace of global growth disproportionally hit economically sensitive areas of the market, resulting in steep net losses within the Russell 2000 for Consumer Discretionary (-5.3%), Energy (-15.4%), Industrials (-7.4%), and Materials (-8.6%).

Two unwanted tricks were handed out with these declines: First, the sell-offs have tended to be highly indiscriminate, taking little account of small-cap companies with the kind of strong fundamentals that we seek, such as strong balance sheets, positive cash flows, and high returns on invested capital.

Second, the violent swings of high volatility have lasted well into October. As of October 23, the Halloween month was positive for small-caps but negative for most large-cap indexes as well as most non-U.S. indexes, regardless of cap size. Corrections are of course a normal part of the equity landscape. From our perspective, the market dislocations of September and October seem to be driven, at least for the moment, by a clear sentiment shift in global growth expectations.

We have always thought that having a long-term investment horizon is of paramount importance. This is especially true in a transitional phase from Fed-driven liquidity to a more exclusively growth-driven market.

Uncertainty might abound right now to the point where many investors may feel like they're lost in a haunted house, but our approach remains consistent and we have stayed calm.

The indiscriminate selling has allowed us to re-enter some of our favorite names at absolute valuations with which we are very comfortable. And finding what we think are excellent businesses at attractively discounted prices is our favorite kind of treat—at Halloween or any other time of year.

Top Companies To Own In Right Now

With the increasing likelihood of a U.S.-led military intervention in Syria, the oil markets have become volatile. Brent prices rose to as high as $117 a barrel last week. The price strength also�might be attributed to ongoing supply disruptions in Libya. The energy strategy team at UBS believes that if military action is taken in Syria, it will be short-lived, and that Libya outages are temporary. Barring escalation of the Syrian conflict to other regions in the Middle East, they expect no prolonged effects in the oil markets.

In a special report for investors, UBS has highlighted top names to buy that can either benefit from the current situation, or at the very least will be affected less than some of the other major firms. Here are the stocks to buy now, broken out by sector with analysis.

Integrated Major Oils

The UBS team expects the large integrated oil companies to benefit from the increase in oil pricing, even if it is temporary. Their concern would be for those with operations in and around the Middle East and Russia, should the conflict spread.

Atlantic Power Corporation (Atlantic Power) owns and operates a fleet of power generation and infrastructure assets in the United States and Canada. The Company�� power generation projects sell electricity to utilities and industrial customers under long-term power purchase agreements. During the year ended December 31, 2011, its power generation projects in operation had an aggregate gross electric generation capacity of approximately 3,397 megawatts in which its ownership interest was approximately 2,140 megawatts. The Company operates in five segments: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest, Southwest and Un-allocated Corporate.     Taking into account all of the data I have shared, I want to introduce my take on the most important names to follow. My initial list takes into account not only the market cap, but also business model and interest level. These are the stocks that I think merit the most attention (in alphabetical order):

    CANV doesn't really trade, as it is held closely by insiders (99.7%, including MJNA). I have a few concerns, including the valuation and some near-term financial challenges typical of a start-up with just one client looking to expand its customer base, but I like the focus and the fact that it is an SEC filer with a relatively clean history (i.e. none of the baggage of some of these other companies). I have spoken to its outsourced CFO and am impressed by his background (has been CFO or held key financial roles at publicly-traded healthcare companies). CANV is the partner to MJNA that is responsible for manufacturing the CBD (Cannibidiol, the cannabinoid in marijuana that is increasingly viewed as offering substantial medical benefits). I am very concerned about the near-term financials, but this is a pure-play with probably a two-year lead over other companies. I don't see a moat in terms of intellectual property or brands, but they have a good lead in terms of sourcing of supply and penetration into potential customers. Quite simply, they don't appear to have competition at present. The company, then, is a call option on CBD demand taking off. It appears that it could be a supplier to even Big Pharma should medical marijuana research move into the mainstream.

    Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

    They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

The chain that claims to be the country's largest beauty retailer -- salon products and services -- delivered blowout quarterly results on Tuesday. Net sales soared by 22.5 percent to $713.8 million, fueled by a healthy 8.7 percent increase in comparable store sales. The strong comps are on top of a 6.7 percent increase during last year's first quarter, and the average store is ringing up 16 percent more in sales than it was two years ago. Net income followed suit, rising 19.4 percent to $50 million or 77 cents a share. Analysts were only forecasting a profit of 74 cents a share. The Ulta-mate Sensation Wall Street is impressed. Wells Fargo (WFC) -- which already had a bullish outperform rating on Ulta stock -- issued an upbeat analyst note after the report came out. Wells Fargo is impressed by the strong traffic trend and robust margins. Ulta had pulled off a whopping 19 consecutive quarters of better-than-expected profitability before proving itself mortal with a miss last fall. It has now rattled off back-to-back beats to start a new streak. String it all together, and Ulta has beaten Wall Street income forecasts in 21 of the past 22 quarters. Cosmetics offer a relatively inexpensive mood boost in much the same way that movies do -- by bringing a little fantasy into your day.     Then and now
    We won't dwell on the past, since it's not going to help us predict the future, but it would be silly not to hit the highlights. Starting at the top, Macy's has increased its revenue for four years running, and it hit $27 billion in 2012. Earnings per share have kept up as well, rising from $0.78 in 2009 to $3.29 last year. That's a 321% increase over four years. To put some context around that, Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) has grown earnings per share by 78% over the same period.
