Last Friday, small cap Farmland Partners Inc (NYSEMKT: FPI) had an IPO to join Gladstone Land Corp (NASDAQ: LAND), Alico, Inc (NASDAQ: ALCO) and Limoneira Company (NASDAQ: LMNR) as the latest option for retail investors seeking a way to invest in American farmland. After all, there is that old quote attributed to Mark Twain: "Buy land, they're not making it anymore." Moreover, February Wall Street Journal article noted that From 2009 to mid-2013, average prices for agricultural land in theUS rose by half while in Iowa, Nebraska and some other Midwest farm states, prices more than doubled. However, the same article noted that there is mounting evidence that the farmlandboom is fizzling out asfarmland prices in Iowa fell 3% over the second half of last year and those in Nebraska fell 1%. The good news though is that today's agricultural sector looks markedly different than it did during the last farmland bust back inthe early 1980s while Greyson Colvin, the managing partner at investment manager Colvin & Co. (which owns about 7,000 acres of farmland), was quoted as saying: "We think this next 12 months is going to be the best window we've had in the past five years [to invest in farmland]./p>

Top 5 Railroad Companies To Invest In Right Now: Barrick Gold Corporation (ABX)

Barrick Gold Corporation engages in the production and sale of gold, as well as related activities, such as exploration and mine development. The company has a portfolio of 25 operating mines and a pipeline of projects located in North America, South America, the Australia Pacific region, and Africa. It also produces copper and holds interests in oil and gas properties located in Canada. The company was founded in 1983 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:

As I've noted before, Freeport isn't the only miner experiencing trouble at its mines. Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) finds itself caught in a particularly harsh position, as it expects to write down some $5.5 billion in assets related to its Pascua Lama project in Chile, where it's waging a battle with the government. The asset writedown coupled with the pushing out of its production schedule to 2016 is jeopardizing its credit standing, especially if gold prices continue to sag.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

And to think the ramp at Mountain Pass will run smoothly defies logic, as miners everywhere routinely run into problems that cause delays. Larger, more astute miners such as Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) , Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) , and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) have run aground on delays and pricing issues, and Molycorp itself has been unable to keep its production schedule on track.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

Chile wants to make really, really sure Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) understands the Pascua Lama mine is absolutely, positively shut until the gold miner builds infrastructure to prevent groundwater pollution. An appeals court formally suspended work at the mine yesterday, although Barrick had anticipated the move last month, and said its work at the project would be delayed beyond its original forecast of late 2014.
